Suiting up for 2011!

Carter wanted a tuxedo for Christmas...wants to look like James Bond! He wore it all day on Christmas and has declared it his favorite present this year. My southern California grandchildren have come to spend the rest of their holiday, to ski and visit and play like crazy! Dylan and Carter are the sweetest close friends; they understand and enjoy the same kind of nonsensical humor and giggle close into each other's faces, all day long! I knew Dylan would want a tuxedo too.

I decided that we'd rent tuxedos for Dylan and Harrison, dress Emma up, go to dinner on New Year's Eve, and spend midnight under the Reno Arch for the big-deal fireworks display. To get "suited up," we went to the "Boulevard of Dreams" formal wear store. There were cases of tiaras, cases of dazzling necklaces, bracelets, earrings! Displays of bouquets, shoes, ring pillows! The store was large but cozy and was filled to overflowing with racks and racks of gowns! The boys got measured and tried on all sorts of vests, ties, bow ties, shirts, jackets, pants---a little bit of an ordeal...like dressing squirming, wrestling, poking, rolling puppies--- but they were delighted to be dressing up. Emma and I hunted for her dress.

With 2000-3000 dresses to choose from, we spent a lavish, giddy 45 minutes whisking dresses in and out of the dressing room. We reveled in tule and organdy, silk, taffeta, crystals, sequins and embroidery! Emma selected a deep turquoise strapless dress with a short ruched skirt. I wrapped her up with a smoky amethyst tule and black velvet shawl, black tights, and flats encrusted with large amethyst rhinestones. With an antique turquoise choker and silver earrings, she's quite a standout to her large background of tuxedos!

Some years we stay in and enjoy expensive cheese, Christmas cookies, sparkling cider. We lazily sit by the fire and make puzzles, play Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, read, talk, nap, kiss at midnight and off to bed. This year, I'll accompany my little gang of pre-teens out on the town, for a kooky New Year's Eve to remember!
